Journey to Weight Loss

Surgical Weight Loss

Our educational program consists of several pre-surgery sessions with our surgeons, as well as counseling with our psychologist and dietitians. We believe that every patient needs to be well educated to be successful in making long-term behavioral changes necessary for effective weight loss and weight loss maintenance. We do not simply perform surgery and send our patients on their way. We are here every step of the way – before, during, and after surgery.

This process begins by attending a free seminar (not mandatory) or an initial office consultation with our surgeons. Next, you undergo a comprehensive medical, nutritional, psychological, and exercise evaluation for preoperative education and medical preparation. This process follows a predetermined pathway (often mandated by insurance companies) that includes:

  • Introductory group class and individual consult with your surgeon
  • Group education class with your surgeon covering the operations.
  • Group education class with medical weight loss specialist (Dr. Boland)
  • Psychologic evaluation and behavioral education
  • Nutrition education and evaluation
  • Exercise education and assessment with our fitness trainer
  • Specialty consultation and tests when necessary (e.g.: lung/heart tests, sleep study, upper endoscopy, etc)
  • Preoperative support group attendance is encouraged
  • Medically Supervised diet if required by insurance company

Once these sessions are complete, the records are submitted to your insurance company for prior authorization, followed by surgery scheduling.

Medical Weight Loss

For those patients that are not candidates for surgery or do not desire this form of therapy, we offer a complete medical weight loss program directed by doctors Edward Boland and Mary Lou Thompson. Patients are invited to attend a free seminar given several times weekly. Interested patients can then schedule an initial consultation to start the program. During this visit each patient will have a complete medical evaluation, physical examination, body composition analysis, review of appropriate lab work, an EKG (if medically indicated,) therapeutic options are discussed and a patient-centered weight-loss therapy is initiated.
Options include:

  • Intensive lifestyle and behavioral change through diet and exercise and close supervision with MD,
  • Nutritionists and support group meetings
  • Low- and very-low calorie diet with meal replacement via New Direction™ Program
  • Appetite Suppressants
  • Any of the above combination of therapies

Throughout this process Dr. Boland works with your primary care physician to maximize therapy of obesity-related diseases, such as diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, hypercholesterolemia, polycystic ovarian syndrome, hypothyroidism, and other metabolic disorders.

Unlike most weight loss programs, we work to achieve insurance coverage for this medical management.
