Making New Year’s Resolutions and Taking Back Your Life

Many people go into the new year with unclear or grandiose resolutions— “Lose weight and exercise every day.” Does this sound familiar? Most often, we create these crazy resolutions because we have just finished binge eating all the Christmas cookies and mashed potatoes we can consume. So why not go cold-turkey and eliminate all junk food only to fall back into your normal eating and health habits?
According to U.S News, about 80% of resolutions fail with 2 months. So, you may be asking yourself, “why even make a resolution then?” Well just because the majority of the population fails at sticking to their resolutions does not mean you need to give up as well.

A major step in creating successful new year’s resolutions is to make sure they are SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and timely). But making sure your resolutions meet all the SMART requirements does not mean you will be able to succeed. First and foremost, you must enlist help!

Finding Success in Support

How many times have you tried to do something only to fail at it because you didn’t have enough time, lacked the appropriate resources, or were just not knowledge enough to accomplish your goals? I know I have been there many of times. Even getting into bariatric surgery, I knew that I could not do it alone.

The same goes for you. Whatever your resolution, you can NOT do it alone. Naturally, we are social creatures and desire to have someone in our lives to celebrate our victories as well as wallow in your failures. Therefore, it is critical to have support to keep you on track for obtaining your goals.

Meeting Your Weight Loss Goals

If you are reading this blog, you at some point in your life have said to yourself, “I want to lose weight or be healthier.” We have all been there—including myself. So, what are you waiting for? Now that you know how to create appropriate resolutions, why not take that next step!

Finding Support

Whether you are looking to lose a significant amount of weight or better manage your health conditions, we can help you. The first step of any journey is awareness. At Live Healthy MD, we are a team of physicians, dietitians, exercise specialists, psychologists, nurses, and more. We have a network of patients who love to share their stories and hear yours.

Like I said above, the best way to achieve your goals is to find support. So even if you are not looking to lose weight, find that perfect someone that will not enable your bad habits, but instead lead you on a path to success.

Evaluating Your Habits

The next step to creating healthy habits is to take a serious look at how you are treating your body. Are you consuming whole foods? Are you exercising? Are you getting enough sleep or spending time on wellness activities?

All of these contribute to a healthier you. And when you feel better, you want to treat yourself better.

Step 1: Evaluate your eating habits and acknowledge that those diets you are on will not last.

Step 2: Document your food for an extended period of time. Focus on your macro (protein, carbs, fats) consumption and caloric intake. Over time you will be able to estimate your macro breakdown and calories consumed without having to track.

Whatever your new year's goals are, be sure you are 1) finding support and 2) making them SMART. You can not find success alone and it is unlikely you will find success when your expectations do not meet reality.
