Video Blog: How Dieting May be Ruining Your Weight Loss

The Talking it Up Show with Arlean Edwards is a local production that interviews keynote speakers within the CSRA. I, Dr. Jacome, was invited to join Arlean on set in a series of videos where I talk about what it takes to live healthy. This is the second video we are sharing from this series. You can find the first video on Calories on our blog page as well. Be sure to stay tuned to see what other exciting topics I cover in the coming months!

Below you will find the transcription of the entire video.

Arlean: We’re back and it’s time for Live Healthy MD with Dr. Francisco Jacome. Dr. Jacome, I’m always excited about this segment because I learn a lot.

Dr. Jacome: Me too, its very...this is what I do! This is what I love doing!

Arlean: I know and you’re good at it.

Dr. Jacome: I love teaching, I love listening from people all the things their grandma said or you know that my friends said. Or this worked for my friend and kinda unravel it and learn from it and see what the truth of it actually is.

Arlean: Yeah, that’s powerful! What are we talking about today?

Dr. Jacome: So we mentioned a little bit about exercise and dieting. I think it is important to kind of clarify some of the concepts of dieting because a lot of people think that, you know, I’m going to do, what we call “the fad diets”. You know, the information that says, “okay you are going to lose 10 pounds in 10 days, I guarantee you or your money back!” Now the question is, do they work? Of course they work! What are they meant to do? They are meant to starve your body so you lose the pounds that they promised you are going to lose. But, they don’t mention the concept about doing it long term. You know, when we want to lose weight we make a distinction between,”am I going to do a diet or am I going to have a lifestyle change?”

Arlean: A lifestyle change is important.

Dr Jacome: Lifestyle change is where it’s going to take you to the long term results. You know if you decide to do a diet, a very strict diet, you know...very classic example! “I have a wedding this weekend, I need to lose a few pounds.”

Arlean: “I got to get in my dress!” *laughing*

Dr. Jacome: “I got to get in my dress”, right? So, those are fad diets. They make you lose a lot of weight very quickly, but to what end? Everybody plays a yo-yo effect. You know, “I’m going to start a diet today”; the grapefruit diet, the cabbage diet...

Arlean: You know I did that grapefruit diet and that crazy thing works; but when it got to the end of it my stomach, my digestion was off, it was all over the place.

Dr. Jacome: And that is exactly what we are talking about. You know does the hCG diet work? Does the grapefruit diet work? Does the cabbage diet work? Yes, all of them do with the limited about of calories that you eat and they use tricks and things to avoid getting hungry.

But what happens when you quit? All the pounds come back. Sometimes they come back even more; its because your body was not designed to do that.

Arlean: Exactly! You know I was sharing with you before we started taping this segment; and I know that she won’t mind my talking about it because I’m not going to call her name. But my mother-in-law used a product that a part of a fad; dieting was the thin-thin. And she had problems with her heart up until most recently. I helped her to do something to strengthen that as much as possible using an herb, hawthorn berry, which is an herb that is good to strength the heart. But the damage is still there.

Dr. Jacome: Yes, and that’s why for anybody that wants to start a diet, for anybody that wants to make a change; it is always a good idea to have physician guidance. Make sure you have the basic blood work, make sure your body is in a good state to start the diet. A lot of changes will always be hard on your body. It doesn’t matter whether it is for the good or for the bad. You know any extreme change, your body is not going to accept it well. So you have to make sure that your body is in good shape to do a diet and also to exercise.

Arlean: You know, we have never been told that before; that you need to make sure that your body is in a state where it can diet.

Dr. Jacome: Yes! Because diets...there are certain types that are aimed for certain things. And the right person to guide you on a diet is your physician. They know how your body functions and they can structure an appropriate diet for you. Not the appropriate diet for everybody else. An appropriate diet for you!

Arlean: It’s not cookie cutter!

Dr. Jacome: It’s not cookie cutter! Diets don’t work that way. Same thing with exercising; you know a lot of people say, “I want to go to the gym, get a personal trainer”; Personal trainer gets ahold of you for 30 minutes, and then somebody can’t walk for a week. And what are you going to do next? You’re not going to go back for a second visit.

Arlean: No, I’m not going to be abused like that again!

Dr. Jacome: Yeah, so exercise is about learning how to do it. It’s like learning to walk again You know, your muscles have to be ready; your heart has to be ready; your lungs have to be ready; your mind has to be ready.

Arlean: That is exactly right! I have watched these shows, and I’m sorry for cutting you off, and there is a prize if you lose the most weight. And as long as the cameras are there and the trainers are at your disposal, you lose the weight. But the moment that all of that is gone, you gain the weight back, plus another person!

Dr. Jacome: And the problem is that all those are designed to make you do it. Things have to come from within. If the change doesn't happen inside, doesn’t matter what the outside is; you will always tend to go back to what your inside is telling you.

You know I can put someone in my basement and torture them with diet and exercise, I will make them lose weight!

Arlean: He said , “torture them with diet and exercise!” because that is exactly what it is! *laughing*

Dr. Jacome: It becomes torture! That is why dieting has to be done in a certain way. So it creates a life change, not just a quick diet.

Arlean: Not just a quick diet, yeah. And you promised that we are talking about diet today; what is going to be our next phase? Because we aren’t just going to leave the viewing audience hanging.

Dr. Jacome: So what we want to do is teach you how to structure a diet. What are the contents? We are not going to give you a diet, because there is not cookie cutter. But we are going to give you the basics of how to structure a diet to be successful at your weight loss.

Arlean: Yeah I like it. Thank you. So I will have my pen and paper when we talk about structuring. And you are going to have someone with us next time.

Dr. Jacome: Yes, I will bring our dietician from our practice and she is going to help us structure a diet, here.

Arlean: Awesome! Live Healthy MD, words to live by. Dr. Francisco Jacome, thank you, thank you, thank you, so much!

Dr. Jacome: Thank you!

Arlean: I am looking forward to next week’s segment. And we are going to talk more about living healthy MD; their location is in Augusta, on Washington Road, Dublin, and soon to be in Macon.

Dr. Jacome: Hopefully, Macon soon. We are working on that.

Arlean: ...And across the nation. I promise you that!

Dr. Jacome: That would be great.

Arlean: Because you are good at that. We are going to go a break and we will be right back after, the break.
